Barwon CASA Groups
Barwon CASA offers therapeutic and supportive group programs, facilitated by experienced counsellor advocates. Therapeutic groups offer survivors of sexual assault and family violence the opportunity to meet others who might be facing similar issues and participants may share the impacts of their trauma in a supportive environment. The issues discussed in the group are confidential.
Groups are offered in response to client interest and counsellor advocate availability. Recently, Barwon CASA has provided the following group programs:
Men’s Group – This is a semi-structured, sexual assault survivor group. Men are supported to consider the impacts of their sexual assault such as confusion about sexuality, concerns about fatherhood and cultural myths about victims becoming abusers.
Young Women’s ‘Staying Strong’ Group – This is a structured group program that caters for women aged between 16 and 24 years. The participants are encouraged to speak about how sexual assault and family violence have impacted on their sense of self. The purpose of the group is to build an informal support to increase connectedness between the young women and to focus on self-esteem and creative self-expression.
Barwon CASA counsellors are planning to run a family violence support group for women who have experienced family violence. This program is currently being developed.
