Barwon CASA 2016 Annual Report

In 2015 – 2016, we provided support for 2,115 family violence and sexual assault cases in the Barwon and Wimmera regions – a rise of 6% from 2014 – 2015.

We have also seen change to the sector which has impacted on our organisation. The Royal Commission into Family Violence has made 227 recommendations to transform the family violence system in Victoria. The Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse is ongoing and continues to unveil horrific stories of child sexual abuse and the need to redress and improve responses into the future. These Commissions provide a confronting reminder of the extent of sexual assault and family violence in the Victorian community.

In 2016, we announced our intention to merge with Minerva Community Services. This means that our organisations will combine expertise, specialist knowledge and skills with Minerva to offer a seamless service to people who have experienced sexual assault and/or family violence. This merger builds on our existing approaches to collaboration and partnership, including our ongoing membership to the Multidisciplinary Centre (MDC).

We are also honoured that two of our clients have shared their stories in this Annual Report and we are extremely grateful to them for allowing us to publish their brave contributions. We also extend our gratitude to all the people who walk through our doors and trust us with the honour of bearing witness to your healing journey.
